About Teacher Cadets

  • This blog was created for a student in a high school who is participating in the Teacher Cadet Program.

The primary goal of the Teacher Cadet Program is to encourage students to consider teaching as a career. A secondary goal is to provide these students insights about teachers and schools so that they will be civic advocates of education.

This blog was created for the student to share learning, insights, questions, and experiences they gain as they participate in the program. Links to other classroom participants are included.

The class blog is located at: Teacher Cadets

welcome to.....

hay there yall. my name is caitlin and i am a junior at a high school in Georgia. this is my first year in the intro to teaching class, and also my first year to this school so all of this is very new to me.i am planning on becoming a 4-5 grade teacher and also getting my special education degree from georgia southern. i have wanted to be a teacher most of my life so when i found out about this class i was very excited.i play lacrosse and am very active with my church. i was involved in interact club and do alot of work with my aunt who is a special ed teacher with students with mild disorders.

we just recently finish a section on test taking tips, and i found that very helpful. we have also done a section called "the pot". it talked to us about who we are and how we become what we are based on the people and things around us, like the situations we are in make the pot of our life. it showed us alot about the way that people are  and how little different things effect the way that they are also. the activity helped us to become more understanding of differences.

i am very excited about next semester because we are going to be able to work with students at the elementary school. also our senior year we will be able to be a paid apprentace, which is very cool. i think that most of the people in my class are very excited and really looking forward to it.

well i think that describes me and this class pretty well so far, but i would love to get some feedback!!

thanks abunch'

Hi Caitlin,

Greetings from another person who “wanted to be a teacher all her life” and did just that!! I’ve enjoyed reading your first blog posting! You seem to be thriving in your new school and new program!

You’ve shared your current goals for teaching upper elementary and working with youngsters with special needs. Working with special needs students is challenging and very rewarding. Speaking from lots of experience, patience is a requirement as is a good sense of humor, something you probably know already from working with your aunt.

I am very interested in “the pot” description. I’ve not heard that expression before but feel it’s right on target. I wonder if you would share more about what’s in “your pot” in addition to your work with your aunt that points you down the road to teaching youngsters with special needs? You mentioned that the activity helped you become more understanding of differences. In what ways do you think that might impact how your classroom sounds, looks, or feels to students?

I can tell you are excited about your upcoming experiences with elementary students. What do you think will be the most important thing you do as you enter your classroom that first time?

You won’t be a student during the time in your elementary classroom!! You’ll be on your way to becoming a professional. I am wondering if that path to becoming a professional means you will be modeling appropriate behavior for your students and demonstrating professionalism for your teacher or principal? According to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards website (http://www.nbpts.org), demonstrating professionalism is one characteristic of an accomplished teacher which I sense you plan to be --. Do you think your teacher or principal you work with might read your blog? I am wondering if they might consider your blog more professional if your punctuation and capitalization were more “teacherlike”? I did feel like we were in an IM conversation (where I never use capitals and punctuation) as opposed to a more formal “Teacher Cadet” blog. You have such a nice way of sharing and explaining; I mention this notion of professionalism to encourage you to strive for that excellence, even in these early days of your travels in teaching and learning.

I am really interested in following your blogging and your tales of learning and teaching!! Do you think this Chinese proverb that one of my former students shared with me is related in any way to your class? "With time and patience the mulberry leaf becomes a silk gown.” -Chinese Proverb

Best,
Lani

Hi Caitlin! I can tell you are going to be a great teacher and blogger as a result of this class. I can't wait to read your posts next semester when you start working with the students.

What are some ways that you plan to use technology as a 4-5 grade teacher?
