About Teacher Cadets

  • This blog was created for a student in a high school who is participating in the Teacher Cadet Program.

The primary goal of the Teacher Cadet Program is to encourage students to consider teaching as a career. A secondary goal is to provide these students insights about teachers and schools so that they will be civic advocates of education.

This blog was created for the student to share learning, insights, questions, and experiences they gain as they participate in the program. Links to other classroom participants are included.

The class blog is located at: Teacher Cadets

Am I Patient?

I am very patient.  It really takes a lot to make me mad and I think I can really use that to my advantage when I'm a teacher.  I can use that to my advantage because I won't feel so overwhelmed when I have thirteen little people with thirteen big personalities that I have to deal with.

For example when I'm in the class room with the kids they all want to talk to me at one time.  I have to patiently tell them that I'm one person and that I will help all of them when I get a chance.  Also when they speak when I'm reading to them.  Its rude of course but they correct that behavior when I nicely ask them to be quiet.

It pays to be patient.

Elementery

I am working with 4th grade students.  I really enjoy this grade because they are still at a sweet and teachable age.  They are really easy to work with and they have a lot of energy .  I love the way they look at the world.  Everything is so innocent and pure in there mind.

I really don't know what grade I want to teach after I graduate from college but I do know that I want to work with elementary children.

This Week

This week I was sick and I really hated missing going to the elementary school. How do you all cope with being away from your students? I feel like I have missed so much.

My Class

Well, I am currently a teachers cadet at the near by elementary school and I am going to tell you  the kids.  My classroom is very colorful and attractive.  It was very cute how they all had there little coat rack and how everything was organized in a fun way.The kids are so cute.  They are so smart to. I have an 4th grade reading class and most of the kids were not in the 4th grade they were in 2nd grade or 3rd.  I was so surprised at how good they could read.  It was a really a good experience.

My favorite teacher

One teacher that changed my life was Mr.McDowell.  He always had something to say about everything and it was always so profound. He was a great teacher and he always got us involved with things going on In the world. One thing he always said was if you see something that needs to be changed then stand up and make it known. He always said we are the future and we can make a difference.

Teachers make a difference and we need more teacher that can make a difference.

Unconditional Teaching

Hi, My name is Jeleysa and I wanted to comment on the article Unconditional Teaching by. Alfie Kohn.  This article really stuck out to me because it mostly talks about how all of these standardized test have replaced many of the fun activities that help students learn.  Also, how lack of interest has taken control of the drop out rates of minorities. Mr. Kohn  has also noticed that many good teachers are quiting because of they do not feel all the standardized testing is needed and they feel it gets in the way of teaching they are meant to teach not just teach for what student need to know for standardized test. Its sad to make up standards that are to high for young children to try to amount to.  I understand its necessary to understand what the child is capable of doing.

I remember when I was younger and being under the pressure of taking ITBS Test every year for Five years and then taking CRCT in middle school and believe me its stressful!!!!!!

One of the reasons I want to become a teacher because of wantching my mother over the years.  She is a wonderful teacher and watching her over the years has inspired me.  Also my love for children.  What inspired you to teach?

My Introduction

My name is Jeleysa and iam a Junior in high school.  My high school offers a class to prepare us for a career in  education.  My class is fairly small so we do a large amount of class disscussions.  I choose this class because I plan on becoming a teacher after I complete high school and college.  I want to teach because I want to effect childrens life the way teachers in the past have effected my life.  So far we have learn about learning barriers and how everyone learns differently. Second semester we will be at the local  elementery school to get hands on experience.  I hope to be placed with either Kindergarden or First Grade.  I feel that is when children learn the most.  I would really like to know how you like teaching.  Also if you feel that it was the best career move for you.  I would also like to know what you like most about teaching, what you dislike about teaching and what you would tell a up and coming   teacher.
