About Teacher Cadets

  • This blog was created for a student in a high school who is participating in the Teacher Cadet Program.

The primary goal of the Teacher Cadet Program is to encourage students to consider teaching as a career. A secondary goal is to provide these students insights about teachers and schools so that they will be civic advocates of education.

This blog was created for the student to share learning, insights, questions, and experiences they gain as they participate in the program. Links to other classroom participants are included.

The class blog is located at: Teacher Cadets

Dear Shanteria,

I am so glad you are enjoying your time in your classroom!

Everyone gets nervous! I was even nervous on the first day of school in my 34th year of teaching. But that doesn't mean you aren't doing a good job, just because you are nervous.

What to do? Take a deep breath. That always helps. But I wonder if working hard to be more prepared would help a bit too. Try to learn student names as soon as possible. You are right, not knowing names really puts a teacher at a disadvantage. If you are worried about reading, ask your teacher if she knows in advance what you might be reading so you can practice.

But more than that, just have confidence in yourself. You've been in school how many years? You know the ropes. Smile, be yourself and your students will be soooo glad that you are there. Everything won't always go as you plan, you'll make mistakes (I made so many). Know that will happen and just plan to learn from it. And enjoy your time with students!!!

Do you think this might be helpful???

Best,
Lani
